Refuge

Have you ever been caught outside in a rainstorm? Not the kind of rainstorm that is refreshing and fun. I’m talking about pelting rain, trees falling down around because the wind is blowing so strong and the sounds of thunder and lighting booming around you.

I must admit I enjoy watching these kinds of storms, but from the comfort of my home or under the protection of a porch. How foolish would you think me if I chose to ride out the storm in my front lawn under the protection of an umbrella or towel? Why would I choose either of them to shelter me from the rain, wind and lightning?

I tend to choose the less than adequate shelter more often than I’d like to admit. I wonder if you do too?

We are in a constant spiritual battle and as Christians we must be reminding ourselves of it. There will be times when we get discouraged by what’s going on around us – the storms of life. We can choose to take refuge in anything that will calm us momentarily or distract us. But what are we called to do when we are overwhelmed or troubled?

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved…Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” Psalm 62:5-8

Why? Why are we called to take refuge in Him and nothing else? He is the sufficient shelter we need. He is not an umbrella or towel. He is the Rock – the Refuge. Why would I seek shelter anywhere else? Here is a song to remind you in the middle of whatever storm you are caught in to find your shelter in the Lord. My soul,  Wait on the Lord.
