Why are we called to sing?
“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing” Psalm 100:1-2
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
I believe God calls us to sing because music: calms, gives joy, encourages thankfulness, teaches, reminds us of truths, and strengthens. Some verses for looking up: Psalm 13:6; Acts 16:25; Psalm 96:1-13. There are obviously more verses out there on this subject and I’d encourage you to find them.
Spending time with my grandfather over the past few years has really reinforced the importance of singing songs about/to God.The songs my grandfather learned as a child are the songs that have stuck with him over the years. These have encouraged his soul and taught him. What kind of songs are we encouraging children around us to learn? Are they songs of substance? Are we singing anymore? I hope the answer is yes.
